Sculptra®

* Before & After results may vary from person to person.

As we age the key elements such as collagen, elastin, and moisture, that keep our skin youthful and healthy looking begin to dissipate, which can result in skin laxity, fine lines and wrinkles, skin depressions, and an overall tired look to the skin. Some individuals need a more targeted approach and will benefit from HA fillers or laser treatments; however, others need something that will give their skin an overall boost, and will address a number of skin concerns at once. As a stimulatory filler Sculptra re-awakens the production of collagen and elastin in the body and rebuilds the binding structures that result in long-lasting skin rejuvenation.

How does Sculptra® work?

Works deep in the skin at the source of facial aging, and targets one of the underlying causes: the loss of facial collagen. Poly-L-lactic acid, the main component of Sculptra®, begins to work within the deep dermis (underlying skin), where your skin’s structure is reinforced as Sculptra® helps to replace lost collagen.

The reinforced collagen structure provides a foundation that gradually restores the look of fullness of your shallow to deep facial wrinkles and folds that have developed over time.
Sculptra can treat moderate to deep facial folds as well as sunken areas of the skin. It also works to improve and soften the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles and is very effective for areas like the nasolabial folds, the cheek hollows, marionette lines, and chin wrinkles.

What can I expect during my treatment?

Sculptra treatments are very similar to any other injectable treatments. They can take anywhere between 30-60 minutes, during which Sculptra is expertly injected into target areas. Because Sculptra is a bio-stimulator it works best when injected into the deeper layers under the surface of the skin. Following your injections, your provider will then massage the product into the face to ensure even distribution.

What can I expect after my treatment?

There’s no downtime following Sculptra treatment. Most patients feel completely comfortable returning to work and their regular activities immediately following their treatment. You can expect some minimal swelling or redness, but this will heal quickly, within 24-48 hours of your treatment. You may have some minimal bruising, discomfort and/or tenderness, which could last for up to two weeks.

You will need to avoid extensive sun exposure for several days following your treatment, and you will also need to massage the treatment area for 5 minutes, 5 times a day, for 5 days. Your Victoria Park Medispa injector will discuss the best way to take care of the area with you following your treatment.

Unlike HA fillers, Sculptra works as a stimulatory filler, it will take some time before you see the results of your treatment, usually anywhere between 3-6 months following your first treatment. Sculptra promotes the production of collagen and elastin in your body, encouraging your body to build new connective structures, which is why typically you won’t see results immediately following your treatment. It takes time for your body to produce the natural elements that will give you a long-lasting result.

We typically recommend anywhere between 1-3 initial treatments for optimal results and your results will noticeably improve following each session, your best results being visible a few weeks after your final one. These results will only continue to improve over the months following your final treatment.

What areas can Sculptra® treat?

Sculptra® is suitable for correcting skin depressions and skin creases in the temples, cheeks, marionette lines, jaw, chin, nasolabial folds and malar area. Sculptra® is also suitable for large volume corrections of the signs of facial fat loss (lipoatrophy). Another popular treatment area is the buttock – also known as the Sculptra Butt Lift.

How many treatments are needed?

On average, 3-5 sessions at 4-6 week intervals are needed. The number of treatment sessions you require will depend on various factors, such as your age, how deep your wrinkles are, and the areas you wish to treat. At your initial treatment, your Sculptra® your provider will determine with you how many treatments may be required. It is important to return for all treatment sessions as instructed to get the maximum effect.

Sculptra® treatment effects differ from person to person. In many cases, treatment results can last for up to 2 years. Touch-up treatments may be needed to maintain the desired effect. Sculptra® achieves its full effect over several weeks, but the visible results will last longer. When Sculptra® is first injected, you may notice an immediate plumping effect that occurs from the liquid that was injected. This is NOT Sculptra’s collagen-rebuilding effect. This immediate plumping effect will disappear over the first few days. The original skin depression may even initially reappear. This does NOT mean that Sculptra® is not working. To the contrary, Sculptra® is discreetly doing its job, and the depression will start to diminish again as the treatment induces the formation of new collagen.

Post Treatment Care Instructions

To ensure the success of the gradual, long-lasting effect of Sculptra®, it is important that you comply with the aftercare instructions provided after every Sculptra® treatment session.
Here are a few easy things you will need to do after each session.

  • Have an ice pack ready. Apply an ice pack to the treated area intermittently within the first 24 hours after treatment to minimize swelling and bruising. Avoid direct contact of the ice pack with the skin; try wrapping it in a clean washcloth. This can be done 2 to 5 times daily for 5 minutes at a time for 1 to 3 days or until the swelling has completely resolved.
  • Give yourself facial massages. Thoroughly massage the treated area in a circular fashion for 5 minutes, 5 times daily for 5 days after each treatment session. This will help provide an even distribution of Sculptra® and ensure a natural-looking correction. Use a moisturizing cream to help reduce the friction on the skin surface during massage.
  • Avoid excess sunlight and UV exposure. Minimize exposure of the treated area to excessive sun or ultraviolet light until any initial swelling and redness have disappeared. If laser treatment, chemical peeling or any other procedure based on active dermal response is considered after treatment with Sculptra®, there is a possible risk of eliciting an inflammatory reaction at the implant site. This also applies if Sculptra® is administered before the skin has healed completely after such a procedure.
